Kassiopi Corfu

Kassiopi, located at the foot of Mount Pantokratoras, is a picturesque seaside village with a population of about 1000 inhabitants. The settlement is located 36 km northeast of Corfu town, close to the Albanian coast and the Albanian town of Agioi Saranta. The history of the island has been greatly influenced by its proximity to the mainland.

The village of Kassiopi was named after the ancient Greek god Cassius Zeus. There are two theories about the origin of ancient Kassiopi. Pyrrhus, king of Epirus, moved the inhabitants from the town of Kassiopi in Epirus to make his military operations in Italy more effective, according to one theory, while another theory claims that the town was founded by refugees from this town after its destruction by the Romans, however many believe that Kassiopi was prospering since the time of Homer.

For many centuries, Kassiopi prospered because of its strategic position on the sea route and because of the temple of Kassia Zeus, which was the most important religious landmark of the island at that time. It also became a popular destination for wealthy Romans such as Cicero, Ptolemy and even the Emperor Nero.

This region captivates visitors at first sight and is blessed with hidden beauties in every corner. Walking among the olive grove paths, you can enjoy the view of the sea, blue skies and green vegetation.

It has a picturesque harbor, coves, with beaches separated by a green cape and the ruins of a Byzantine castle, preserving the traditions and charm of the prosperous village of the Roman era. The Byzantine castle of Kassiopi is the oldest castle of Corfu with its foundation dating back to Byzantine times (12th-13th century).

Around Kassiopi you will find mainly rocky beaches but with crystal clear waters. The main beach is called Kalaminonas and has the easiest access compared to the others. There are sunbeds and umbrellas for rent but it also offers activities such as diving and water skiing. About a kilometre to the left is the smaller beach of Imerolias which is sandy but has no organization. However, Kassiopi is much more than just a place of natural beauty and nice beaches. It is a cosmopolitan area with historical aspects of which have been lost forever after all that it has suffered during the attacks over the centuries.

Kassiopi is popular with internationals, particularly a mature and cosmopolitan British crowd who favour its atmosphere, facilities, and good-quality restaurants over direct beach access. Here in Kassiopi you can find many kinds of shops like supermarkets, souvenir shops and everything else you may need. The waterfront is lined with traditional tavernas and seafood restaurants. During the day you can go for a ride or take your bicycle to discover Kassiopi surroundings. The ideal place where you can spend the evening is near the port where in a little and lovely old square there are plenty of late bars, cocktails, sports bars, and places providing entertainment.
